Tried my hand at painting

I took a class at Painting with a Twist a few months ago, and as all crafters do, I wanted to do MORE!

So, when I got home I made these two paintings later that week.

Sewing Basket makeover

You can tell by the colors of this basket that it was from the 90’s. I refused to pay $$ for a new one that would just get outdated again, so, I made this one over with supplies I already had!

(the closure was even broken on this, that’s why the off color ribbon)

make-over sewing basket:

ended up using purple fabric paint (in the tube) to paint over the green striped wood.

Fixed the closure with a button & a jewelry necklace closure. Kinda tricky, but I’m the only one that uses it, so its ok!

My First Geode

Last weekend I went to the Gem, Mineral and Fossil Show here in Houston. It was nice and small and close to my house. Being my first time to this show, I went around to everything first then went back to THE GEODE GALLERY that came from Indiana with all their geodes.

Well, I had no idea how to select my geode, but the guys at the booth were extremely helpful in explaining how to select a “good one”. The kind I picked was a Mexican “Coconut” Geode  because I wanted some sort of color inside versus the other kind they had that you needed a black light to shine on the geode to show a color hue it had.

Each “coconut” was marked with a number -turns out it was the price. As I was picking up geode to see which one (price-wise) I wanted, the guy explained, the more lightweight, means the cavity inside is bigger & has more to it.  After hearing that, I went with the very first one I picked up. So the two men went over to this machine with a chain, one held the geode, the other made the machine squeeze the geode till it cracked in 1/2.  At this time there were a bunch of cub scouts standing around watching as well.

The man let me open it first to see my very first geode. LOVED IT!!! It has a slight blue/purple/gray hue inside and VERY sparkly with some calcite!!  I had the biggest smile on my face!!! Of course I had to buy the stand to show it off!!!

Once the men packed my geode & stand for me, they said “it may be your first, but it won’t be your last…” Oh I know THAT!!  LOVE it!!!

Clean off your desk challenge

My craft desk was a complete mess, so I created a swap to challenge myself.  “Clean off your desk Challenge” was a swap that you were to take a “before” photo of your craft desk top –yes as is, a mess…

I had tons of projects and supplies on my craft desk top. I wanted to actually UTILIZE all the stuff laying ON my desk top & not go into any other supplies around my craft room. Great idea huh? Yeah, well, when I actually was able to complete 40 cards from all that stuff JUST on my desk top, it made me really stop to think… DO NOT buy anymore new stuff.

Due to time restrictions, I was only able to make 40 cards…. I still probably could make another 60 with the supplies/stuff STILL on my desk top.  With my new position as work, I don’t have all craft time I used to have for my swaps right now.  Makes me sad that I can’t craft as much as I want to, but the OT pay from work makes me happier for my savings for my Galapagos trip!! 🙂   I’ll have time to craft again soon…. 🙂

Been busy making cards

I hosted some card challenge swaps on swap-bot in my Use Your Stash series of swaps. One on dog/cat, one on purse cards, one on fashion.

One of the physicians’ I work for received this black embossed card and of course, they didn’t care how “pretty” it was, and me being the “shiney sh*t saver” I am, I had to have this base card –they could keep the invite part that was inside!  I’ve had it laying around for a few months, and after my summer cleaning this week, I came across it again and thought it would be perfect for this swap.

And for this last card, I had an example using coffee filters on cards laying around my craft desk for months,  so today was the day the inspiration finally hit me for it. LOVE how it turned out! Just used the Big heart punch from Stampin Up! for the bustier and a tiny flower punch to kind of bring out the flowers in the ribbon.  Of course I made a few of these with a tiny bit of variety for each.

Snake Bracelets

Well, because our backyard is a Wildlife sanctuary with our water features (pond, pool, bird baths), we seem to attract snakes. Some I don’t mind, if it’s not poisonous (* round pupils = not poisonous  vertical slit eyes = poisonous snake). Keep those in mind when you come across a snake.

This is my “LIVE” snake bracelet.  He was so friendly & let me mess around with him to make him into a bracelet.

These next guys weren’t as cooperative, mostly because they were poisonous Copperhead snakes. Because of THAT and the safety of us, and our pets, we killed him (by cutting his head off). Well, then of course I couldn’t just leave well enough alone, I had to make a REAL bracelet out of him but w/out his cooperation. Watch this video my dh filmed of me making my bracelet (1st one). These are a RARE limited edition (only 2 made as of today’s date). And for me, that is ok.

I adhered the skins to a thrift store-bought bangle bracelet (too big for each of these tiny snakes apparently) with Modge Podge. Let dry (seals the scales of the skin.)  By rushing to do my 1st bracelet, I realized I should’ve painted the red bracelet first – oh well, live & learn. So the 2nd one I did paint the bracelet first. The skins are very transparent when dry. I covered the inside of the bracelet with a wide ribbon I had and covered it and the outside of the skin with Diamond Glaze.   Not bad for never messing with snake skins before. Maybe next time if we have tiny snakes, I’ll make pendants or earrings instead.

Copper Etching class at my Craft Club

OH MY GOSH — this has GOT to be THE coolest project — not to mention EASIEST — that I have ever learned at my craft club!!

Copper Etching using rubber (or acrylic) stamps with Stazon ink. Some kind of stinky poisionous chemical, water and baking soda. That’s all. No rubbing, no sanding no scrubbing… and my project (1st ever) came out PERFECT!!! YAY ME!!!   Now that I’m addicted to this NEW technique, I have to find that chemical and buy some copper blanks already to use!!!  Watch out etsy copper sellers, here I come!!!
